What is the difference in the measurement modes?
If you are unsure about the difference between Single Echo, Echo-Echo, and Multiple Echo measurement methods used in our wall thickness measuring equipment, then take a look at them individually on our information pages for detailed explanations.
Briefly explained, Single Echo is the use of a single pulse and the measurement of the first reverberation response only. This gives an accurate result when the wall thickness measurement equipment is measuring a surface that is not covered by a coating. The single measurement means that the total time from emission to detection is measured and cannot account for or eliminate the thickness of the coating.
Conversely, Echo-Echo allows the wall thickness measuring equipment to eliminate a coating that is up to 1 mm thick. This is enough to ignore coatings such as thin paints and surface rust layers. It does this by measuring the disparity between the initial echo detection reading and a secondary echo which reverberates off the inside of the surface without travelling through the coating.
Hence, the second reading will be a shorter time, and highlights the time taken for the wave to travel through the coating. Thus, the wall thickness measuring equipment can eliminate the coating and record an accurate reading for the engineering material alone.
Similar to the Echo-Echo measurement method, Multiple Echo uses several readings to guarantee an accurate reading of the material you want to measure without the coating. In addition to the two readings that echo-echo uses, our multiple echo method uses one more reading. This gives a total of three readings, where the second and third should be exactly the same. This three-reading system allows for coatings up to 6 mm thick to be eliminated, or up to a staggering 20 mm if the “Deep Coating” setting is used.
