How Do Ultrasonic Hatch Cover Tightness Testing Devices Work?  

Seawater can be an expensive thing to deal with when it finds its way inside a ship’s cargo hold as it can cause a lot of damage and the loss of a ship’s cargo. This can result in high-cost insurance claims for shipping companies predictably looking for a way to offset said cost. That’s where leak detection for hatch covers comes in. 

Ultrasonic hatch cover testing is an economical means of evaluating and testing hatch seals for leaks, ensuring they remain sealed against seawater and the elements. The Cygnus Hatch Sure does this by utilizing 19 ultrasonic emitters (40kHz) that are arranged to produce an omnidirectional sound field. This sound field “fills” the hold and as the sound energy passes through the closed-down cargo hold, the feedback is shown by the receiver. 

This feedback accurately highlights any potential areas of ingress, even micro-fractures that aren’t visible to the naked eye. Such a method is ideal for checking leaks in:
