What is an Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge?
In the field of testing and inspection, there exist a variety of techniques, but none are as convenient or practical as using an ultrasonic thickness gauge. The whole purpose of an ultrasonic device is to take non-destructive measurements of the thickness of a solid surface. This could be a pipe wall or a conduit, an entire assembly, or something else entirely.
These surfaces are usually metallic, though ultrasonic thickness gauges can detect thicknesses through a variety of other surface materials too. An attached probe transmits a sound pulse through the test piece. When the pulse hits the far wall, the return echo is received by the probe. The gauge then calculates how long it took for the pulse to reflect back, which, in turn, provides the thickness measurement.
The whole point of using ultrasonic thickness gauges is to assess for signs of corrosion, erosion, or damage. The measurements can be analysed to determine whether the test piece needs repairing or replacing or whether the whole assembly needs to be retired outright. Because of this, ultrasonic thickness devices are frequently used to inspect structures and components out in the field.
While most ultrasonic thickness gauges utilise Single-Echo and Echo-Echo modes, ours utilises our in-house developed Multiple-Echo mode as standard. Multiple-Echo mode emits three pules rather than one. The intervals between each pulse are measured and must be the same for a measurement to be recorded. Because of this, Multiple-Echo mode records with a far greater degree of accuracy, even through protective coats and paints.
Please note that if you require Single-Echo or Echo-Echo modes, these are included on our ‘+’ devices. Also, we supply twin-crystal probes that work in tandem with these two modes.
What are the Benefits of an Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge?
Perhaps you’ve been utilising more traditional testing and inspection techniques and are unfamiliar with how ultrasonic devices could make your life a lot easier. There are many advantages to investing in ultrasonic thickness gauges as they drastically improve the way testing and inspection is carried out in the field. The key advantage is that these devices are entirely non-destructive. Other benefits include:
- Compatible with Data Logging and Statistical Analysis Programs
- Highly Accurate Results (More So Than Traditional Methods)
- Lightweight and Portable
- One-Sided Measurements
- Quick and Simple to Use
- Versatile
First, why is a non-destructive method preferable? This one doesn’t need a lot of explaining, but put simply, traditional methods often require some form of disassembly. Parts of the test piece need to be sectioned or cut away. This takes time, costs money, and causes wastage in scrap that must be discarded. An ultrasonic device measures through surfaces, so no disassembly is required, saving you scrap and labour costs. You won’t need access to both sides of the test piece.
Once you’ve taken your measurements, you’ll notice that the gauge only gives a basic output of information. For a more comprehensive analysis, you’ll need to run the data through a PC software programme, and that means getting the data from the device to your computer. All gauges come with onboard storage and data transfer ports (USB or RS232), making this whole process a breeze.
Of course, you’ll need to collect the data to begin with, and so we’ve made our gauges both lightweight and portable. They can be easily carted out into the field, no matter how remote the location might be. They can be quickly and easily deployed in minutes, and measurements taken in a matter of seconds.
You won’t even need to worry about putting yourself or your team through extensive training. To ensure that human error is minimised, we’ve made our devices super-easy to use and highly intuitive. Only a basic amount of instruction is required, and the smallest amount of operator interaction is needed to achieve the desired outcome.
Lastly, it’s worth noting that ultrasonic thickness gauges are highly versatile, able to perform an array of tasks. Calibration tests are super-easy to perform with no zeroing required. And the gauges can be used on a variety of engineering materials, from metals to plastics, composites, fibreglass, and even rubber.

Why Choose Cygnus Instruments?
Cygnus Instruments was founded back in 1983, and since then, we’ve revolutionised the testing and inspection industry. The company was formed to address a gap in the market for reliable thickness inspection devices. Through thousands of hours of research, development, and continued investment, we’ve set a new standard with our ultrasonic thickness gauges and in-house developed Multiple-Echo testing mode.
The name comes from the fact that multiple sound pulses are used for this process. The time between each pulse is measured, allowing for greater through-coat accuracy, meaning that paints and coatings don’t need to be removed and won’t be included in the displayed measurement.
With a Multiple-Echo-enabled device, you can read through coatings up to 20mm thick (with Deep Coat mode engaged). The standard thickness is 6mm with this mode disengaged. Multiple-Echo mode can also be used to take measurements of curved surfaces.
At Cygnus Instruments, we pride ourselves on our excellent customer service skills and excellent after-sales support. All our products come with a three-year warranty. Through our product registration system, our customers will be kept up to date with all the latest news, including special offers, newly available products, software updates and regular recommendations.
We would also encourage you to look at the resources on our website whether you already use one of our thickness gauges or are considering buying one. This section has a wide range of useful information about our products and their appropriate maintenance, including brochures, catalogues, product manuals, technical specifications as well as reorder forms.
